Lauderhill Wins Honorable Mention for Climate Protection Award

On June 11, it was announced at the US Conference of Mayors Annual Conference, that Lauderhill was one of 5 cities selected for Honorable Mention for the 2010 Climate Protection Award.

This award given annually to recognize cities and mayors for innovative practices in their cities designed to increase energy efficiency and curb global warming.

Lauderhill's program, "Lauderhill's Sustainable Initiatives Green Program" coordinates numerous city programs involving energy savings and information. The web site is www.lauderhillgreen.com, and it informs viewers about a variety of green issues, including green ordinances of the city, to programs that teach how energy can be saved. There is information on how residents and businesses may obtain money to help reduce their energy costs.

The Award has over 200 applicants annually. One first place winner and 5 Honorable Mentions in each of the two categories. Sponsorship was by the US Conference of Mayors and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Lauderhill Wins US Conference of Mayors City Livability Outstanding Achievement Award

The US Conference of Mayors announced today the winners of the 2010 City Livability Award. Ten cities under 100,000 were recognized as winners, 4 Honorable Mention 3rd Place Awards, 5 Outstanding Achievement 2nd Place Awards, and 1 First Place Award.

Lauderhill won a 2nd Place Outstanding Achievement Award for its "Jazz Picnic in the Park" Concert Series. The major point is that the program provides a high quality event with top local performers, yet only costs $1000/performance. Therefore it is easily duplicated elsewhere, and provides a community event at a reasonable price. In fact, the event is becoming so popular that many tourist are attending.

SCHOOL’S OUT TRAFFIC SAFETY TIPS

As the school year comes to a close, the City of Lauderhill, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) of Broward County remind motorists and students to take extra traffic safety precautions during summer break. During the summer children are at increased risk of transportation related injuries from pedestrian, bicycle, and motor vehicle crashes. FDOT and the CTST offer the following tips for making summer safer for motorists and students.

Tips for Motorists
· Slow down and obey all traffic laws, speed limits and traffic signals.
· Keep an eye out for children walking or bicycling in the street, especially where there are no sidewalks.
· Be alert for children playing and for those who may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
· When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch for children walking, biking skating or skateboarding.

Tips for Parents
· Be a good role model. Always buckle up in the car, always wear a helmet when biking, and always follow pedestrian safety rules.
· Supervise young children as they are walking, biking or skating.
· Provide your children with bright clothing so motorists can easily see them.
· Make sure that your child is properly buckled up in the appropriate child safety seat and in the back seat. Safety experts advise that all children under the age of 12 should ride in the back seat.
· Make sure that your teen driver understands and obeys all state traffic laws.

Tips for Students
· Always buckle up when riding in a car. Always ride in the back seat. It’s the safest place for young people.
· Always wear a helmet and follow traffic safety rules when riding your bike.
· Learn and practice the safety rules for pedestrians. It’s extremely important for you to use the sidewalk when available, look left-right-left when crossing the road, and always walk facing traffic.
· Always cross at crosswalks, obey all traffic signs and traffic lights.
· Teen drivers should avoid speeding and minimize distractions (texting, talking on cell phones, eating, adjusting the radio) while driving. Never overload your vehicle. Require everyone riding in your vehicle to use a safety belt.
· Teen drivers should be a good role model for your younger brothers and sisters and friends, and help them learn and follow vehicle safety rules.

East Side Improvement Updates

Sadkin Center:

The building should be complete in June with final punch list being done in July. Staff should begin occupying the building on July 19, 2010. The building should be open to the public July 26, 2010 or August 2, 2010. The Grand opening is planned for August 26, 2010.

Crosswalk on 16th Street:

A request has been sent to Broward County Traffic Engineering to put in the crosswalk on 16th Street. The City will request a timeline for installation of the crosswalk and provide that to you.

Old City Hall

The City is completing this project in two phases. Phase one will include the land improvements excluding the building. The bid for phase one of the first City Hall park closed mid April. The City will negotiate with the selected contractor and the item should be on June or July agenda. The construction should begin in July/August. Phase two of this project is the construction of the building. Phase two of this project should go out for bid before the end of June.

47th Avenue:

We applied for a federal grant for improvements on 47th Avenue. We are awaiting a decision on granting the City federal stimulus funds for this project.

Sidewalk extensions on 49th avenue and 51st Street:

Due to budget constraints, we do not have funds to complete all of the sidewalk extensions at this time. However, DEES Director plans to install at least two of these sidewalk extensions during this fiscal year.

New Jazz Picnic In The Park Schedule - 3rd Season

Why Doesn't Someone Fix Those Pealing Mast-Arms?

This question has come up a lot. The mast-arms were put up all over Broward, and they are pealing. So, why aren't they fixed? Why is it taking so long? This is the answer we received from Broward County.

"The mast-arms are owned by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and were designed, permitted, and constructed as part of a FDOT project. These mast-arms are not owned by Broward County, nor is the paint finish maintained by the Broward County. FDOT is very much aware of this situation and is currently in the process of evaluating solutions to restore the paint finish to these mast-arms. We understand that FDOT has also filed a claim against the contractor as these mast arms are still under warranty. THE PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES DEPARTMENT IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR SUMMER CAMP 2010!

DATES: Mon., June 14th – Friday, Aug. 20th (no camp on Mon., July 5th)

AGES: Children must be going into Kindergarten through 6th grade, ages 5-12 years old. (a birth certificate as proof of age is needed). SORRY – NO PRE-K!!!

Learn to Dive

Parkway Middle School to get Improvements

Meetings have been held at Parkway Middle School to inform the community of the reconstruction that is going on at the school. The school will be rebuilt, including a new gymnasium and a 3 story classroom. Trees are going to be planted as well as new landscaping and entry ways. Some of the trees have already been relocated on the site.

REGULAR WORKSHOP:

1. ANNUAL STATE OF LAUDERHILL HOUSING AUTHORITY (REQUESTED BY HOUSING AUTHORITY)

The Housing Authority has purchased numerous properties and is rehabbing them and renting them. Ultimately to be sold. New single family houses will be built on former quadplex purchases that have been torn down. Those will be sold. Energy Star appliances are being used. They are still in pursuit of obtaining control of the housing vouchers issued in the city. There are about 1200 in Lauderhill. We are very confident that this will be successful.

2. HOUSES OF RELIGIOUS WORSHIP AND ZONING REQUIREMENTS (REQUESTED BY VICE MAYOR DALE V.C. HOLNESS)

Places of Public Assembly are being reviewed due to conflicts with putting them on major roads. However, they also create problems in neighborhood areas. More review will be done with future recommendations.

3. DISCUSSION OF TURNPIKE OVERPASS (REQUESTED BY CITY MANAGER, CHARLES FARANDA)

Agreement was to have meetings with the community to discuss safety issues, and to find out if they want the overpass to continue.

4. REVOLVING LOAN FUND GUIDELINES FOR APPROVAL (REQUESTED BY CITY MANAGER, CHARLES FARANDA)

New guidelines were agreed upon with a minimum FICO score of 580, along with other loan qualifying requirements. There is the ability to appeal a decision.

5. CHANGE OF ADDRESS FOR 2000 CITY HALL DRIVE (REQUESTED BY CITY MANAGER, CHARLES FARANDA)

To avoid confusion, it was agreed to restore the old address of 2100 NW 55th Ave.

6. FIRE SUPPRESSION (REQUESTED BY CITY MANAGER, CHARLES FARANDA)

The problem at Park South is common in many condominiums from that time period. When a new roof is required, fire suppression devices can be installed, otherwise they are grandfathered in. The discussion was to have the Fire Department to meet with associations to discuss voluntary installation of fire suppression devices to improve safety.

Historic Sri Lanka vs. BLACKCAPS Series Re-Shaped

This week's historic series of international cricket matches scheduled for Florida has been re-shaped to include two double headers, featuring the New Zealand BLACKCAPS vs. Sri Lanka and the USA vs. Jamaica.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka were originally scheduled to play three international Twenty20 matches to launch the hosting of full international cricket in the USA. However, the International Cricket Council has ruled that the lights available at the Broward County Regional Park are not quite up to the standard required for the broadcast and hosting of full international cricket.

"Ideally the inaugural game in the Pearls Cup series would have been a night game on Thursday, The lights at the stadium are fine for most levels of cricket, but they need to be of a higher standard for the playing and broadcast of international cricket." said New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan.

“And added to this, there is a high probability of rain and thunderstorms in the region on Thursday which added weight to our decision. Because of these factors, we have decided, along with our partner USA Cricket, to focus all of the attention on the weekend with the two double headers as well a full One Day International between USA and Jamaica on Friday the 21st.”

"The BLACKCAPS are tremendously excited about the opportunity of launching international cricket in the United States and it promises to be an amazing weekend of cricket. The BLACKCAPS have had fantastically close games against the Sri Lankan team in recent times and the Pearls Cup series promises to be a great spectacle.

It is also great to see that Jamaica have sent a full-strength squad, including a number of players who have played for the West Indies. Their games against the top USA team should also add a lot to the event" Vaughan said.

On May 10, the City Commission meet for a CRA Meeting and Regular Commission Meeting. The following is notes of interest on the items discussed. All items voted upon passed unanimously, unless otherwise indicated:

CRA MEETING:

1) 38 AVENUE PROPERTY – PRESENTATION BY ANDRE PARKE. Asking for more International Trade Show applications for this area. They are supportive of the city's efforts in the area. There are 2 properties to be viewed at specifically. Funding from the county has not come forward.

2) REDEVELOPMENT CAPITAL PROGRAM FUNDING UPDATE - $1.8 M available for some properties and 441. $3.8 M available in Central CRA for housing. Options of trying to move monies between CRA's, trying to make a public/private partnership, have the city through the Lauderhill Housing Authority move forward with its own development.

3) JUNE MEETING DATE - June 14 meeting moved to June 28.

4) NEW BUSINESS $16.5 M in Recovery Bond was issued by Broward County to Carishoca. They are ready to move on the Hotel and Exposition Phase. There was a request of allocating funding to assist on moving them forward. A presentation was made on how the developers could go forward. The Commission was supportive subject to a full review and recommendation of the Administration.

USA to Host New Zealand vs. Sri Lanka in International Cricket

May 20-23, 2010, at the Central Regional Park in Lauderhill, the US Cricket Association will be hosting three 20/20 International Cricket games between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. These games are the first internationally officially sanctioned games between national teams in the only certified cricket stadium in the United States.

This match marks the launch of a new strategic partnership between USA Cricket and New Zealand Cricket to further advance the sport in the United States. "USA Cricket has worked hard to bring this event about and we are very excited about the potential impact of this series for the growth and development of cricket in the United States," said Gladstone Dainty, president of USA Cricket.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) CEO Justin Vaughan said, "NZC has long seen the dynamic potential of cricket in the USA." He added that he hopes to see the BLACKCAPS playing in the USA on an annual basis.

The Sri Lanka-New Zealand match series follows the ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies, which concludes with competitions in Barbados on May 16. Sri Lanka was a finalist in the 2009 event and is expected to perform well again this year. The BLACKCAPS were semi-finalists in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and made it through to the Super Eight stage of the 2009 event. The two teams will be competing in Broward County for the Pearls Cup, named for the Indian property development company, Pearls Infrastructure, sponsoring the matches.

USA Cricket CEO Donald Lockerbie said the three-match series for Broward has been in the works for some time as part of a new "Destination USA" initiative. "We believe that in order to grow the game of cricket in the USA, we need to have the best teams in the world play in our country," said Lockerbie. "We want to demonstrate to the American public just how exciting the T20 format is. Cricket is already popular here but has lacked major media coverage. This inaugural series is the first step to reverse this situation."

Cricket as a sporting event last made significant history in the United States in 1844, when teams from the United States and Canada met in the first international cricket event between two nations in world history. Now the stage is set for another historic sporting event.

The inaugural game is Thursday night, May 20, and matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23. Duncan Finch, Park Manager at Central Broward Regional Park and Stadium, encourages residents to come early to take in the festivities as vendors will be selling traditional foods of New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

"This promises to be a great introduction to the sport of cricket for the residents of Broward County and South Florida," Finch said.

Game times, ticket information and pricing will be made available on the USA Cricket Web site, http://www.usaca.org/. ESPN will also be broadcasting the series worldwide live from Central Broward Regional Park and Stadium.

UPDATE: The game for Thursday has been cancelled, and new games have been reset to Saturday and Sunday during the day. See the schedule at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the Stadium. Over 7000 tickets have been sold so far.
