After the holiday, to dispose of the tree, from December 26 – January 2, 2014, please place your Christmas tree on the swale on your normal garbage collection day and All Service will collect the trees.  If you live in a Condominium, please place your trees in your dumpster.  The disposal company may pull the trees from the waste stream for yard waste.

Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Applications Posted

It’s that time of year again to let all of Broward County's youth know when the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) application will be posted online.  

The application for summer positions will be available on the website at http://syep.wf1broward.com starting January 13, 2014 and will be closing on January 24, 2014.

Every year the Youth look forward to this program as it helps them gain important employability skills and keeps them active during the summer by acquiring valuable work experience; and every year the SYEP looks forward in providing them this unique opportunity. If you know of any businesses (nonprofit or government) that may be interested in providing a work experience please forward them my contact information provided below.

Free Get Your Business On-Line (GYBO.com) Workshop

On January 16 and February 20, from 9:30 to 11:30 am, the City of Lauderhill and The Small Business Development Center will be conducting free workshops on how to Get Your Business On-Line (GYBO.com).   The program will be held at Lauderhill City Hall, and is designed for those that presently have no web site.  Please bring your laptop with you.

This interactive workshop will take the participants through the process and by the end of the Workshop their web site could be active.  The GYBO.com program provides free services for the first year, and a small monthly fee thereafter.

Attendance preference will be given to Lauderhill Businesses and Residents.  Each workshop is limited to 30 people and it is encouraged to call to sign up at mayorsaide@lauderhill-fl.gov or call 954-777-2042.

PROJECTS NOW POSTED ON POWER2GIVE.ORG FOR NEW DONOR MATCH

2:1 Community Foundation of Broward matching grant targets new donors, expanded audience to support new cultural and arts projects

New donors who give to any of the arts and cultural projects posted at power2give.org/broward will see that donation triple thanks to a $100,000 matching grant from the Community Foundation of Broward to support artistic projects by non-profit organizations in Broward County.

Facilitated by Business for the Arts Broward, the initiative is designed to attract and encourage new donors. Through December 15, any donations made by new donors to the projects will be matched 2:1 up to $10,000 by the Community Foundation of Broward. That means a $25 donation will result in $75 for the project. Own the Overpath -- YMCA of Broward County

The YMCA of Broward County strengthens the foundations of community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

The Florida Turnpike Overpass in the City of Lauderhill has become an imposing and divisive obstacle for its surround­ing communities. Own the Overpath engages Lauderhill students, parents, and residents to increase the safety of the Overpath. This dangerous crosswalk connects students who live to the west of the Turnpike in Central Lauderhill to their school and YMCA in East Lauderhill.

Youth and com­munity members who use this pedestrian bridge daily are exposed to a dark, littered, dangerous crossing where many report being the victim of assaults and intimidation.

Own the Overpath is seeking additional funding to transform the chain link fences and the surrounding sidewalks with colorful textures that are derived from various workshops conducted with members of the Lauderhill community.

Own the Overpath is a powerful and unique opportunity for highly visible community artwork to visually demonstrate how art changes public perception and results in positive community action. Donations will provide additional support for art supplies for improvements around shade structures, side walk improvements, and improvements to the fence.

2.  Circle of Friends & Stars – Cultural Masks

From November to December the Circle of Friends & Stars will be presenting workshops creating Cultural Masks which will provide 45 adults with Autism, Down Syndrome & those with developmental disabilities, ages 18+ with the opportunity to design, create and showcase their creative skills.

The project gives these otherwise neglected special needs adults a chance to express themselves in positive, creative ways that reinforce confidence and artistic abilities.

The Circle of Friends & Stars is seeking funds to enhance this project by purchasing specialty materials; clay, tools, special glazes, canvas and adornments along with art instructors related to this project. Each participating special needs adult will be able to showcase their ABILITY and learn to prepare their individual items for public exhibits.

Approximately 45 special needs adults and new donors who wish to join in the project are invited to participate in the Workshops.

3.  Oscar Thomas Foundation – Senior Masterpiece Program

The Oscar Thomas Foundation is committed to promoting a healthy senior citizen community. This includes ensuring that senior residents have creative outlets to help them work through depression, loneliness and other disorders. To address this concern, we established a Senior Masterpiece Program that encourages seniors to create and become their own masterpiece.

Since 2004, hundreds of senior citizens have participated in this sought after program, held at the Herbert Sadkin Community Center in Lauderhill. In addition to teaching the arts, The Foundation sponsors the costs of art supplies, materials, transportation and admission to museums, exhibits, plays, and other art related field trips.

The Foundation is seeking your support with a senior citizen therapeutic arts initiative that focuses on the visual side of the brain that normally expresses unconscious feelings through images instead of words. This program uses multidisciplinary art to encourage lifelong learning.

Beginning January – May 2014, at the Sadkin Center, the Foundation will offer program enrollment to Broward County senior citizens. In a two-hour weekly class, participants will learn to use visual art, music, drama, creative writing, and other disciplines as empowerment.

The program promotes health, wellness, self discovery, emotional healing and lifelong learning activities by helping senior citizens:

· promote creative expression;

· tap into the imagination;

· examine the body, feelings, emotions, and thought process;

· explore dance, drama, music, visual arts, writing, poetry, and their effects;

· improve senior citizen confidence in their own creativity;

· give voice to what is felt within;

· gain knowledge of the therapeutic advantages of expression through the arts.

 4.  Mental Health Association of Broward County: Recovery Rocks

Many years ago rocking chairs emerged as an aid for treatment of various ailments. Rocking regularly is shown to calm the spirit, soothe a stressed body, and refocus the mind more pleasantly.

9Muses’s Recovery Rocks program combines the holistic benefits of rocking chairs with the artistic beauty of the mental health community. This program will enable MHA to purchase 12 unfinished, high-grade rocking chairs to be personally painted by the artists and used in the Center to benefit our members.

For close to 20 years, we have focused on recovery through the arts and have provided free membership to more than 4,000 individuals with mental illness. Each of our members brings a unique talent and vision to the Art Center and this project. The artists work individually and collaboratively to promote healthy expression through creative opportunities. 9MusesArtCenter at the Mental Health Association office has also successfully created and provided public art at locations such as South Florida State Hospital, Broward Health, Florida Medical Center and Henderson Behavioral Health.9Muses serves as a social center and source of support, where members can shed the stigma of mental illness and collaborate on visual and performing arts. Classes are offered for an array of activities. Each of the artist’s work is available for sale at the Center and directly benefits the artist. Once 9Muses is equipped with the rockers to meet the needs of our members, we will begin working with other providers to spread the benefits of Recovery Rocks.

North Area Magnet Schools Showcase – December 9 Parents and Students Can Shop for a Magnet School Program

Parents and students who reside in the north area of Broward County are invited to explore their magnet school choices at the North Area Magnet Showcase on Monday, December 9, 2013, from 5 – 9 p.m. at Broward College, North Campus in the Omni Auditorium, located at 1000 Coconut Creek Blvd., Coconut Creek.

In all, 23 elementary, middle and high magnet schools ranging in themes from science, pre-engineering and performing and visual arts, to technical and international baccalaureate, will showcase exhibits, student performances and interactive displays.

This event will provide a wealth of information about the many experiences and opportunities students receive in magnet programs. Parents and students residing north of Sunrise Boulevard will be able to speak with principals and magnet coordinators, and receive a personal overview of magnet schools.

Attendees will be able to apply online at the event. Applications may also be submitted online through February 12, 2014, by visiting the District’s website (browardschools.com) and clicking on the School Choice, Easy as 1, 2, 3 icon. Lauderhill’s City Commission and Historical Board Members will Host a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Opening of the City’s Historical Museum

The City of Lauderhill, now 54 years old, was incorporated in 1959.  Lauderhill’s rich history is a source of pride for both former and current residents.

On, Thursday, December 5^th, 2013 at 4:00 PM, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place to open the new Historical Museum located in Wally Elfers Park, and YOU ARE INVITED!!!

The Mayor and Commissioners appointed several leaders from the community to help gather artifacts and information to adorn the walls and display cases at the Historical Museum. The Museum is located in the exact location of the very first City Hall for the City of Lauderhill. The contents displayed in the Museum were donated by members of the public. The story boards are collections of newspaper articles along with Lauderhill’s legislative history that tell the fascinating stories of how Lauderhill became the All America City that it is today.

“Members of the Historical Commission are hoping to continuously collect artifacts from the public after The Museum opens its doors,” says Tom Harney, Chair of the Committee.  They expect to continue to add to the displays as well as rotate them when additional donations are made. Future phases of the museum include audio and video displays as well.

The Historical Museum will have meeting and recreation rooms that the Parks and Leisure Services Department will schedule.

Happy Thanksgiving by Mayor Richard J Kaplan

Thanksgiving is actually my favorite holiday of the year. It is one of the few holidays that anyone in America can celebrate. It is both nondenominational and nondiscriminatory. It is a joyous holiday to celebrate giving Thanks to what we have, and the promise of what we hope for. For those who are less fortunate, it is a time for helping and sharing.

Surrounding the Thanks itself are some of the most enjoyable traditions of any holiday. Turkey, with stuffing, cranberries, sweet potatoes/yams, pumpkin pie, special parades, a few extra days off and football, just to name a few. Bringing this all together with family and friends. What could possibly make anyone more happy?

So when you sit down this year to your Thanksgiving Feast, stop a moment and think of what is truly important, and enjoy the moment knowing that what you have IS what is truly important.

On behalf of the City of Lauderhill, my family and myself, we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving, and go Lions (I'm from Detroit).

3rd Annual Y College Tour - March 21-28, 2014 - DESTINATION: NEW ORLEANS, LA

This year our educational journey in 2014 will feature visits to: University of Florida, Florida State, FAMU, Tuskegee, Louisiana State (LSU), Xavier, Dillard, University of South Florida along with several historic visits to Montgomery and Birmingham, AL.

 

Goals:  Motivate Students to Pursue Post-Secondary Education

Assist students with planning and decision making related to their educational future

Introduce students to various types of college campuses (size, academic focus, campus life) to expand their knowledge of college admissions procedures

City Received Additional Funding for 2 School Resource Officers for Elementary Schools

The City of Lauderhill received notice that the School Board of Broward County will be funding the cost of two School Resource Officers (SRO) to be place in two Lauderhill Elementary Schools.  The schools have not been selected, but there are 6 such schools in the city.
