Lauderhill’s Mayor and Commission to Hold a Ribbon Cutting and Park Dedication - James D. Bradley, Jr. Park

On June 30, 2014, a Resolution was passed by the City of Lauderhill’s Mayor and Commission to name a parcel of undeveloped park land in the West Ken Lark Community after a longtime Community Activist – then President of the West Ken Lark Homeowners’ Association James D. Bradley, Jr.

The four acre parcel of land located at 3100 NW 16 Street on the west side of NW 31 Avenue was pursued by President Bradley with hopes of it becoming a park for the residents of his community to enjoy.  City leaders agreed and sought Community Development Block Grant and Land Preservation Bond dollars for the land acquisition as well as enhancements.

Vice Mayor Hayward J. Benson, Jr., sponsored the resolution to name the park after Mr. Bradley explained, “Mr. Bradley was an extraordinary man. He served his community ardently and never took no for an answer. So many people benefited from his perseverance.  Creating a park in his honor is a small token we can offer for a man who provided leadership to a community he revered.”

The Ribbon Cutting and Dedication of the James D. Bradley, Jr. Park is going to be on Thursday, December 4 at 3:30 pm. The park is located at 3100 NW 16 Street.

After the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Dedication, refreshments will be served at Fortunes Bar and Grill located at 1451 NW 31 Avenue.

George Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation

Thanksgiving Proclamation

Issued by President George Washington, at the request of Congress, on October 3, 1789
By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and—Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favor, able interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other trangressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

An Open Letter from FPL About Light Poles Which Was Requested to be Shared

 Dear Chuck,

As you are aware, Florida Power & Light Company is committed to providing electricity its customers can count on. That’s why we are investing about a half a billion dollars between 2013 and 2015 to make the electric system stronger and more resilient.

A large part of this improvement work involves replacing aging poles with new, stronger ones. As we do this work, it often results in “double poles” because many poles hold lines owned by other utilities – such as telephone and cable TV – that must be transferred to the new poles. We cannot remove an old FPL pole until other utilities have relocated their lines to the new pole.

Despite several years of our repeated requests, AT&T and Comcast have not promptly relocated their lines to new poles in Lauderhill and several other communities we serve.

By law, we cannot move the equipment owned by these utilities without their permission. As a result, we are unable remove the old poles, which is frustrating the community, our customers and us as a company. We are pressing these utilities for their cooperation as it relates to this issue and want to let our customers know what they can do to help encourage the removal of the lines and poles.

FPL will be placing signs on some of the double poles in Lauderhill to help customers understand the pole removal process. We encourage customers to call AT&T and Comcast to expedite that process. Attached are copies of the signs for your reference.

We appreciate your understanding and support. Thank you.

Consolidation of E911 Dispatch System is Complete on October 1st – New Non-Emergency Number Also Takes Effect

The year-long project to consolidate the county’s E911 Regional Dispatch System will be complete on October 1st. In 2002, Broward County voters approved a charter amendment calling for a countywide emergency dispatch system that would coordinate response for life-threatening emergencies, regardless of where in Broward County the call originates.
After extensive research, analysis and an inclusive community input process, including a board comprised of city managers and administrators, fire, police and law enforcement representatives; municipal leadership representing 87 percent of Broward County residents agreed that the County should operate a countywide dispatch system to improve public safety response and address the challenges of a decentralized system.
Effective October 1, 2014, all municipalities in Broward County are part of the regional consolidated system, except Plantation and Coral Springs, who elected to continue to operate their own systems. The E911 Regional Consolidated Dispatch System is managed by Broward County Commission’s Office of Communications Technology and operated by the Broward Sheriff's Office. Under the new system, also beginning October 1st, all residents, except those living in Plantation and Coral Springs, will call a new 954-764-HELP number for Non-Emergency Police or Fire Services. Residents should continue to call 911 when they need immediate assistance to save a life, report a fire and/or stop a crime.

Greater Fort Lauderdale National College Fair - Free National College Fair, October 21, 2014

The Greater Fort Lauderdale National College Fair will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, from 9 a.m. to noon and 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and hosted by the Southern Association for College Admissions Counseling (SACAC) and Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), this event is free and open to the public.

As the process of applying to and selecting a college becomes more and more competitive and complex, students and parents need all the help and information they can get. The Greater Fort Lauderdale National College Fair will provide valuable resources for students and parents attempting to navigate the college admission process.

The college fair will give students and parents an opportunity to meet one-on-one with admission representatives from a wide range of national and international, public and private, two-year and four-year colleges and universities. Participants will learn about admission requirements, financial aid, course offerings and campus environment, as well as other information pertinent to the college selection process. At the fair’s counseling center, students and parents can discuss their individual needs with college experts. Students with special needs will be able to learn about programs and services at colleges and universities for students with disabilities.

Evening workshops designed to make the college transition a little easier will cover such topics as Financial Aid and Deferred Action Act, Scholarship Quest and Bright Futures Scholarships, Value of Advanced Placement Exams, Highly Competitive Colleges, Preparing Your NCAA Student Athlete, and Fundamental Career Planning for High School Students. Workshops will be conducted in English and Spanish. Interpreters will also be available.

“The resources and opportunities that the National College Fairs provide for students and their families are invaluable,” said Greg Ferguson, NACAC Director of National College Fairs Programs and Services. “Admission professionals have been delighted by the caliber of students attending our programs.”

Now in its 42nd year, the National College Fair program annually helps more than 675,000 students and families nationwide explore their options for higher education, making it one of the most visible college recruitment tools in the country.
