FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IN BROWARD COUNTY ADVISES EVERYONE TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS DURING CURRENT AIR QUALITY CONDITIONS
People with respiratory ailments, pregnant women, infants, children and the elderly are at greater risk
Smoke from wildfires may cause coughing, a scratchy throat, irritated sinuses, shortness of breath, ches pains, headaches, stinging eyes and a runny nose.
Problems can begin a very short time after breathing in smoke and without warning.
DOH-Broward offers these recommendations:
Limit outdoor activities and remain in an air-conditioned environment, if possible.
If you do not have an air conditioner and if smoke is likely to get inside your house, leave the area until the smoke is completely gone.
Avoid activities that put extra demands on your lungs and heart. These include exercising or physical chores, both outdoors and indoors.
Make sure you take all your medications according to your doctor’s instructions.
Dust masks, bandanas, or other cloths (even if wet) will not protect you from smoke.
Contact your healthcare provider if you are concerned or your health gets worse.
For additional information on Broward County’s air quality forecast, contact Broward County Air Quality Division at (954) 519-1260 or visit

FEMA Issues New Flood Maps
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a Letter of Final determination notifying unincorporated Broward county and the 31 municipal governments in Broward County that the new flood maps have been finalized.
During the next six months, FEMA will disseminate copies of the maps and unincorporated Broward County and the municipal governments must adopt them.
The effective date for the new Broward County flood maps will be August 18, 2014. After the effective date, insurance companies will use the maps for flood insurance purposes, and the undated base flood elevations must be used for all new construction and substantial improvements to existing construction. Visit www.broward.org to view the new maps.
For those with flood insurance that no longer require it, you may contact your insurance carrier to request the flood insurance requirement be dropped from your mortgage. Thereafter, you may decide to cancel your insurance, but you may wish to maintain it.
The flood maps show significant changes in Lauderhill and have removed many properties out of flood zones so they no longer require flood insurance. However, the opposite may be true for some.

Dolphin Draft 2014
The biggest problem the Dolphins have is that they only have
six draft choices and that just isn’t enough for this year. Particularly in the early rounds. But as the saying goes, “You play the cards
you are dealt.”
Of critical need that they must draft in the first 3 rounds
is at least one starting Offensive Lineman who can play right tackle, and an
Inside Linebacker (for which there are only two available that are worth
it). After that a good Defensive Tackle,
another Offensive Lineman and a Safety are badly needed. A Running Back and Tight End are also a major
concern for the future. That alone is
seven picks and to do this the Dolphins must pick up one more selection.
At the 19th slot in the first round, if OL Taylor
Lewan or OL Zack Martin is available you grab them. If not but ILB CJ Mosley is available, select
him. If all three of them are gone you’ve
got to go to plan B. Moving up in the
draft would short you one more draft selection, and you they don’t have any to
spare. Moving down in the draft a few
spots to pick up a 3rd round pick may make a lot
of sense.
The Dolphins could go ahead and pick an OL like Morgan
Moses, but he could still be there in around in the late 1st round. Also, OL Joel Bitonio and Xavier Su’a-Flo
would be there.
What I would hope would happen in Plan B, if your first 3
preferred picks are gone is to trade down to around 25th and pick up
a mid 3rd Round Pick.
With a mid 20th pick I would select OL Morgan
Moses and if not available, then Joel Bitonio (a bit of a stretch, but a
need). With the 2nd Round
pick I would pick up the only other decent ILB out there, Chris Borland.
With two 3rd Round picks, you can go for two
other needs an OG Dakota Dozier and DT DaQuan Jones or if the DT is gone, then DT
Daniel McCullers (which you might hold off to the 4th Round). If you do hold on the DT to the 4th
Round, you could look for Safety Dion Bailey, OG Gabe Jackson or OT Billy
Turner. But that is a risk. If you select the DT in the 3rd,
then S, OG, OT or TE could be in the 4th Round among the Best Player
Available left.
However as far as TE’s goes, there is only worth drafting at
that point, and that is C.J. Fiedorowicz.
The 5th and 6th Rounds you just select the BPA
irrespective of position, you never know when you might need them. But a preference would be to pick up a RB
like Tyler Gaffney that may be able to also serve as a FB, or FB Jay Prosch who
can block well but is a question if he could be a 3rd down back to
punch it through.

BCPS Castle Hill Elementary All-Girls Team Nationally Ranked No. 2 in Chess
A three-girl chess team
representing Broward County Public Schools Castle Hill Elementary School in
Lauderhill, placed second nationally at the 11th Annual Kasparov Chess
Foundation All-Girls National Championship in Chicago last week.
The Lauderhill school trio
of McKhaila McKenzie, Erykah Shaw and Shyan Braswell brought home a national
second-place ranking for teams under 12 after defeating fierce competitors from
public and private schools across the country. Many of the other girls competing
were supported by well-funded chess programs and had either master-level chess
coaches for personal or frequent group lessons.
Castle Hill girls’ secret
weapon was their dedicated teacher and coach, Robert McKenzie, who taught them
the game. McKenzie is a veteran teacher who has served at Castle Hill Elementary
for 18 years.
“This was one of the most
astounding performances of rising to an occasion of intense pressure I ever
witnessed,” McKenzie said. “Their second-place finish at a national tournament
is a testament to the hope that our children can accomplish anything they desire
if they listen humbly, work hard and do their best.”
“Research shows that chess
increases analytical thinking,” said Dr. Mark Strauss, director of School
Performance and Accountability, who has been working on a plan to bring chess to
District elementary schools. “We are thrilled that the Castle Hill all-girls
team represented us nationally and showcased the phenomenal outcomes that chess
produces.”
“I applaud the
accomplishment of the students at Castle Hill Elementary,” said city of
Lauderhill Commissioner Kenneth Thurston. “The teaching of chess expands the
mind and increases the capacity to learn.”
The Kasparov National
Championship is the most prestigious chess event for female players under the
age of 18.

Andrew Smalling - Lauderhill's Police Chief
ANDREW SMALLING, the Jamaica-born police chief of Lauderhill, Florida, is now in his third year in office has been enjoying a downward trend in crime. In the first two
years, Lauderhill has seen a 14 percent drop in
crime, noticeably in violent crimes like murder, rape, robbery and aggravated
assault involving use of weapons, and violent crimes went down by 24 percent.
With a police force of 140 Smalling gives credit to an emphasis on intelligence-driven operations and insistence on accountability of the command
staff for crimes in their area of responsibility.
Each area of the city has been divided into districts with its own crime profile. This way problems and solutions in the district can be specifically addressed. It also allows the police force to be proactive in preventing some crimes known to a particular district by using a Predictive Policing Program purchased by the city. The program looks a crime trends over the last few years and predicts where crime is likely to occur in the future.
Often criminals are creatures of habit so these programs help uncover these habits. In the process it makes the police force more visible, and deters crime if criminals are seeing this police presence where they were going to commit a crime.
Other programs being utilized in the city is community policing, having officers attend homeowner meetings to hear directly from residents, using an anonymous tip line using text messaging through TIP 411 so that information is given anonymously, placing more School Resource Officers who participate with students in their projects, and sponsoring a Citizens Academy and a voluntary Citizens on Patrol (which is part of the Neighborhood Watch Program).

First Annual Senior Domino Games – A Huge Success
Lauderhill, FL.
Excitement,
camaraderie, competition was in the air Saturday, February 1, at the First Senior Domino
Games held in Lauderdale Lakes. The event was spearheaded by State
Representative Hazelle Rogers (D-Lauderhill) in an effort to have Dominoes
become a sanctioned sport in the Florida Senior Games.
“I was thrilled at
the turn out for this inaugural event. I would like to thank the cities of Fort
Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, North Lauderdale, and Miramar for
partnering together to promote the event and ensure that it was successful. We
exceeded our projected goal of registered players and judging by the number of
spectators, we expect the Senior Domino Games to double in size next year,” said
Representative Rogers.
Ruddy Schaaffe,
Tournament Administrator said, “The First Seniors Domino Tournament was a
tremendous success. The hospitality provided by the hard-working committee,
under the leadership of State Representative Hazelle Rogers, created an
atmosphere of high spirited fun and very competitive play.”
With 80 competitors
from as far away as Port St. Lucie, The Senior Domino Games proved to be a great
day of fun and competitive play. Much of the day’s success was due to the use
of the Multiple Partners style of play, also known as Random Partners, which
promotes mental acuity, fair play and allows the competitors to get to know each
other. All players enjoyed this style of play and look forward to participating
again next year.
In an effort to
acknowledge a player who works tirelessly to promote the sport and the Senior
Games, each host city will be allowed to name the trophy after a deserving
senior in their city. The 2014 host committee has named the inaugural Senior
Games trophy after Ms. Eulalee Bax, an avid player, who plays four nights a
week.
The Senior Domino
Games were open to all players ages 50 and over. Participants competed for a
first place prize of $600. Prize money was awarded to those finishing in
1st -12th place. The top four female players also
