For the 3rd year, the City of Lauderhill has awarded college scholarships to 4 graduating Lauderhill Seniors. The Scholarship Award is based upon essays submitted by students that will be attending a college or vocational school in the fall.
The amount of the scholarship is $500 each, and the essays are reviewed by the Lauderhill Educational Advisory Board. Money for the scholarship comes from the Federal Confiscation Crime Fund of the city, which was assigned to Mayor Kaplan to use. The essay questions come from actual college applications essays.
The winners are:
Kelly Scurry - St. Thomas Aquinas, who is deciding between the University of Florida, Duke University and University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
Phylicia Taylor - Pompano High School, to attend Florida A&M University
Shamira Bynes - Nova High School, to attend Florida A&M University
Kayla Tucker - Pompano High School, who is deciding between USF, FIU, FAU and Florida Gulf Coast University
