56th Avenue Under Construction

The long awaited replacement of 56th Avenue is now underway. This project will significantly change the total appearance of the road, providing parking, landscaping, bicycle paths, and new drainage. Most of the funds to pay for this were from the Great Neighborhoods Bond funded in 2005. Construction time is expected to be as long as 18 months, and therefore the completion should be by the end of 2007.

The traffic load on 56th Avenue is growing daily with all the extra turnpike interchange traffic at Sunrise Blvd; 56th AVE. MAY BE ONE OF THE MOST OVERLOADED TWO-LANE ROADS IN AMERICA. A desperately needed Turnpike/ Oakland interchange will be a big-big help even if not 100% ideal. It is too bad 56th Ave can not be TEMPORARILY four-laned until an Oakland interchange is built; otherwise using the new bike lane might sometimes be best way to avoid expected traffic gridlock on a two-lane 56th Avenue.

Let's make signs and march for that Turnpike/Oakland interchange! We need it, I think, right about where the traffic light is now at Rock Island...not on the bridge. Perhaps we should steal our kid's roller blades as an alternative mode of transportation.
