The Winners of the 2014 Lauderhill College Essay Scholarships

At April 28th Commission Meeting, checks will be presented to the winners of the 2014 Lauderhill College Essay Scholarship.  Lauderhill residents which are Seniors in High School going on to College or Vocational School applied by answer two 500 word essays:

1. What would be the best way to end bullying in school?
2. Describe your favorite fictional literary character and what draws you to that character.

Funding for this program was provided by Florida Medical Center and Prestige Auto Wash.

Bike Lane on NW 19th Street From SR 7 to Powerline

1.       The scope of the project will be milling 1” and resurface 1” on the exiting roadway. Restripe the road to 10’ travel lane and 4’ bike lane on both side of the road.

1.       The project is scheduled to be advertised for design in May 2014 and the design contract is scheduled to be executed in November 2014.  Based on the Work Program  the budget for design phase 32 is $850,000.00 and the budget for construction phase 52 is $5,503,916.00.

ORDINANCE NO. 14O-02-105:  CREATING SUBSECTION 3.1.15., RESIDENTIAL MULTIPLE-FAMILY AT 40 DWELLING UNITS PER GROSS ACRE (RM-40) ZONING DISTRICT;  CREATING PARAGRAPH 3.1.15.D., SPECIAL EXCEPTION USES AND STRUCTURES AMENDING SCHEDULE B., ALLOWABLE USES, SECTION 1., USES ALLOWED IN RESIDENTIAL DISTRICTS, BY ADDING THE PERMITTED, ACCESSORY, AND SPECIAL EXCEPTION USES AND STRUCTURES ALLOWED HEREIN IN ORDER TO ENSURE INTERNAL CONSISTENCY; AMENDING SCHEDULE P., DESIGN STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES, SECTION 2., GENERAL DESIGN STANDARDS, TO ADD ANY DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENTS WITHIN THE RM-40 ZONING DISTRICT.  This was amended to now require that all residential development in the newly created RM-40 Zones must apply for a Special Exception in addition to other previously approved requirements.  Because of the amendment, a Fourth Reading will be required.

ORDINANCES & PUBLIC HEARINGS - SECOND READING

ORDINANCE NO. 14O-02-105:   AMENDING THE LAND DEVELOPMENT REGULATIONS, CREATING SUBSECTION 3.1.15., RESIDENTIAL MULTIPLE-FAMILY AT 40 DWELLING UNITS PER GROSS ACRE (RM-40) ZONING DISTRICT.  This would apply to the old McArthur Dairy site.  At second reading, an amendment offered by Mayor Kaplan were passed to now require a special exception requirement to utilize this new zoning.  Because of this amendment, a third reading of the Ordinance is required.  Also, the Commission would review and approve the site plan submitted in this particular case.

Lauderhill Fitness Walking Program - FREE

Walkers MUST complete paperwork and waivers at the time of registration.
Walkers MUST record their walking while in a Lauderhill park with pedometer or small phone walking apps.
Walkers MUST check in with a Lauderhill Recreation staff person weekly to show the mileage app before and after walking in the Lauderhill Park.  Only mileage gained while walking or exercising in a Lauderhill Park will be recorded.  Walkers cannot "call in" their mileage.

First Annual Senior Domino Games – A Huge Success

Lauderhill, FL. Excitement, camaraderie, competition was in the air Saturday, February 1, at the First Senior Domino Games held in Lauderdale Lakes.  The event was spearheaded by State Representative Hazelle Rogers (D-Lauderhill) in an effort to have Dominoes become a sanctioned sport in the Florida Senior Games.

“I was thrilled at the turn out for this inaugural event.  I would like to thank the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, North Lauderdale, and Miramar for partnering together to promote the event and ensure that it was successful. We exceeded our projected goal of registered players and judging by the number of spectators, we expect the Senior Domino Games to double in size next year,” said Representative Rogers.

Ruddy Schaaffe, Tournament Administrator said, “The First Seniors Domino Tournament was a tremendous success.  The hospitality provided by the hard-working committee, under the leadership of State Representative Hazelle Rogers, created an atmosphere of high spirited fun and very competitive play.”

With 80 competitors from as far away as Port St. Lucie, The Senior Domino Games proved to be a great day of fun and competitive play.  Much of the day’s success was due to the use of the Multiple Partners style of play, also known as Random Partners, which promotes mental acuity, fair play and allows the competitors to get to know each other.  All players enjoyed this style of play and look forward to participating again next year.

In an effort to acknowledge a player who works tirelessly to promote the sport and the Senior Games, each host city will be allowed to name the trophy after a deserving senior in their city.  The 2014 host committee has named the inaugural Senior Games trophy after Ms. Eulalee Bax, an avid player, who plays four nights a week.

The Senior Domino Games were open to all players ages 50 and over. Participants competed for a first place prize of $600.  Prize money was awarded to those finishing in 1^st -12^th place.  The top four female players also received a cash prize of $25 each.

The Beatles Are Coming - A Tribute

On this Saturday, February 22, beginning at 7 pm, the City of Lauderhill will present a Tribute to the Beatles by the Beatlemanixs.

This free event will be held at the Lauderhill Sports Park, 7500 W. Oakland Park Blvd. (just east of University Drive).  Parking is both in the front and rear of the park.

There will also be an art show and Food Trucks.

Bring your chairs, blankets, and food.  No cooking allowed and there are no seats available.

Sixth Annual Sports Advancing Kids thru Education (S.A.K.E.) Award Ceremony

Sixth Annual Sports Advancing Kids thru Education (S.A.K.E.) Award Ceremony being held on Thursday, February 20th at Parkway Middle School at 6:30 pm.

We will highlight the achievements of all our student athletes and community volunteers in our youth sports programs in a similar ceremony as the Grammy's and ESPY Award Ceremonies.  The seven award categories are Scholar Athlete, Sportsmanship, Leadership, Community Service, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year.

Lee Daniels to Speak at the Lauderhill MLK Gala during Black History Month – February 15, 2014

The City of Lauderhill and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force are happy to announce the MLK Gala previously scheduled for January 18th featuring Screenwriter, Producer, Director Lee Daniels has been rescheduled during Black History Month for Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 4 pm.

Vice Mayor Bates, the event organizer, explains, “Mr. Daniels is welcome here anytime. We realize that having an ‘A-List’ guest as accomplished as Mr. Daniels will bring us a relevant speech that is guaranteed to be spectacular. For those of us planning to attend….this should be a night to remember!”

The location and format of the event has not changed. The Gala will be at Screen Post Production, located at 3500 NW 15 Street in Lauderhill, 33311 on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 4 pm. Tickets are $60 per person and are currently on sale. Tickets ppreviously purchased for the January event will be honored.
