FEMA Issues New Flood Maps

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a Letter of Final determination notifying unincorporated Broward county and the 31 municipal governments in Broward County that the new flood maps have been finalized.

During the next six months, FEMA will disseminate copies of the maps and unincorporated Broward County and the municipal governments must adopt them.

The effective date for the new Broward County flood maps will be August 18, 2014.  After the effective date, insurance companies will use the maps for flood insurance purposes, and the undated base flood elevations must be used for all new construction and substantial improvements to existing construction.  Visit www.broward.org to view the new maps.

For those with flood insurance that no longer require it, you may contact your insurance carrier to request the flood insurance requirement be dropped from your mortgage.  Thereafter, you may decide to cancel your insurance, but you may wish to maintain it.

The flood maps show significant changes in Lauderhill and have removed many properties out of flood zones so they no longer require flood insurance.  However, the opposite may be true for some.
